The Outback 40-goal Challenge was played at
International Polo Club Palm Beach in
Wellington, Florida on February 18. Eight 10-
goal players put on a show for a large crowd,
and all to raise money for the Polo Players
Support Group.
Founded by Dave Offen in 2002, to date the
Polo Players Support Group has awarded over
$1.3 million to 38 seriously injured or ill polo
players and grooms. For many players, it is the
only organization they can turn to when they
are injured or ill. The organization does not pay
for medical care, which could quickly wipe out
any reserves it has, but instead helps with living
expenses for players and or their horses while
they are unable to work.
This year team sponsors included Equus &
Co. and EFG Bank. Players included Adolfo
Cambiaso, Juan Martin Nero, brothers
Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres, Eduardo
Novillo Astrada, Pablo Mac Donough and
the newest 10-goalers Pelon Sterling and
Sapo Caset playing in the event for the
first time.
Immediately following the game
guests made their way to the Nespresso
Pavilion for cocktails, live and silent
auctions and a VIP dinner hosted by
Outback Steakhouse. The live auction is
always a spirited event, with guests trying
to outbid each other for the players' team
jerseys. Other auction items include a
polo week with Mariano Aguerre in
Argentina, a catered Outback dinner
party for 100 guests, hunting and boating
trips and tickets to the Kentucky Derby.
In conjunction with the event, the 8th
annual Jimmer Newman Memorial was
played earlier in the day, when young
players got together to play a match in
honor of Jimmer Newman who passed
away on October 8, 2004 at just 24 years
old. The match also raises money for the
Polo Players Support Group.
